Bratya Basu, the Education Minister of West Bengal, held a press conferece today to address recent revelations about the employment of Sujan Chakraborty's wife. Basu stated that he was unaware of Chakraborty's wife's employment and that it was not within the government's monitoring jurisdiction.
He also addressed accusations that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) brought Group C and Group D under the School Service Commission for their own interests. Basu denied the allegations and stated that a full investigation would be conducted after discussing with the Chief Minister.
Basu further mentioned that an investigation was needed to determine whether Sujan Chakraborty's wife was interviewed for her job, which she obtained in 1987, and emphasized that the decision regarding the investigation would be made after consulting with the Chief Minister.
Regarding corruption in the education sector, Basu stated that it was a problem that began during the previous government's tenure and called for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate. In addition, Basu addressed allegations of irregularities in 64,000 jobs during the Left government's period, citing the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) report.
He also commented on the resignation of Abhik Majumder from the syllabus committee, stating that Majumder had requested to teach in the University and had been asked to resign from the chairmanship of the syllabus committee and become the advisor of the syllabus committee. Basu also mentioned allegations against Shuvendu Adhikari made by Partha Chatterjee, stating that discussions would be held with the Chief Minister, and an investigation would be conducted if any documents were provided.
Lastly, Basu commented on the Sarada chit fund case and pointed fingers at Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, without naming him, for the incident that took place during his tenure.
